Tyre deflation, or blowout poses a real threat to the safety of occupants of a vehicle, as the tyre strips easily off the rim. The rim now gouges its own path along the road, making steering of the vehicle difficult, if not impossible. The vehicle becomes uncontrollable, often leaves the road, collides with objects or other traffic, or rolls over, with serious consequences to the occupants and other road users.
A safety band, when fitted to a wheel rim prevents tyre stripping, in the case of a tyre blowout or deflation, thereby allowing the vehicle to be safely steered, and brought to a halt with minimum danger to the occupants, and to other road users.
Legislation recently passed (Sept 2005), makes the fitting of safety bands to the wheel rims of certain categories of road users (particularly public transport vehicles), mandatory.
Problem:
Safety bands, when fitted to a wheel rim, are on the inside of the tyre, and are therefore not visible from the outside.
Legislation makes no provision for the confirmation that safety bands are actually fitted, and enforcement of the legislation is therefore difficult.
Solution:
Identipet (Pty) Ltd is the sole Southern African distributor for Digital-Angel Corp. (formerly Destron Fearing) USA.
Amongst other products distributed, is an implantable RFID microchip manufactured for animal identification and other industrial uses.
This RFID microchip is eminently suitable to be encased in a plastic/nylon holder (BandScan) and attached to the fastening mechanism of the safety band.
This RFID device, once applied, can now be read (by means of the MPR microchip reader) from the outside of the tyre, thereby confirming the presence of a safety band applied to the wheel rim, within the tyre.
The construction of the safety band allows for the placement of the BandScan, adjacent to the inflation valve of the tyre, thereby allowing for quick and convenient confirmation of safety band fitment.
